This 196 mile route of 14 stages goes generally north-eastwards from the west coast at Arnside to the east coast at Bamburgh. Most of the route is in Cumbria and Northumberland with about two days in Durham and a few minutes of the first day in Lancashire. The route passes through the Northumberland National Park. What is now Cumbria before the 1974 boundary revisions was Westmorland apart from the Sedbergh area which was in the West Riding of Yorkshire. This explains why the route also crosses a corner of the Yorkshire Dales National Park. Two days are spent in the Howgill Fells and two days in the Cheviots. Other highlights include Middleton Fell, High Cup Nick, the Harwood Valley, Blanchland and its surrounding moorland, and the towns of Appleby and Hexham.
